Challenges are often first recognized in structured environments like school or work, where expectations are clear. But the impact doesn’t stop there. “It also shows up in relationships,” Erica noted. “That can be with partners, friendships, or within a family.”
One of the most common struggles is getting started. Simple tasks can feel difficult to begin, even when someone wants to complete them. “What people often think of as procrastination or laziness can actually be ADHD,” Erica said.
For many people, understanding can change how they view themselves and their experiences.
Why ADHD Gets Overlooked
ADHD doesn’t always match the picture people expect. In some cases, symptoms are subtle. In others, people have learned ways to compensate or hide their struggles.
As a result, behavior is often misinterpreted. A child may be seen as not trying. A teen may be labeled unmotivated. Adults may blame themselves when tasks feel harder than they should. “If we don’t stop to ask why something is happening, we miss what’s really going on,” Erica explained.
This is especially true for girls and women, whose symptoms are often less visible. Instead of outward hyperactivity, they may experience constant mental activity, such as racing thoughts, difficulty slowing down, and feeling mentally overwhelmed.
It’s also common for related concerns like anxiety or depression to be identified first. While those experiences are real, they can sometimes be connected to ADHD that hasn’t been recognized. When only part of the issue is addressed, people may still feel stuck.
The Long-Term Impact
When ADHD goes unrecognized, the effects can build over time.
For children and teens, this can affect school performance, relationships, and confidence. For some, the transition to college can be especially difficult without the structure they relied on in high school.

A diagnosis later in life can bring both relief and reflection. “It can feel like the last puzzle piece coming together,” Erica said.
At the same time, people may look back and wish they had understood things sooner. Both reactions are common and part of the process.
